Energy Identification Codes (EIC)

Learn about the system of Energy Identification Codes used across Ireland and Europe.

The EIC System

The Energy Identification Code or EIC is a 16-character code used in Europe to uniquely identify entities and objects in the electricity sector. They facilitate cross-border exchanges.

ENTSO-E develop, operate and maintain the Energy Identification Codes (EIC) system. They act as the Central Issuing Office for Energy Identification Codes across Europe.

EIC in Ireland

In Ireland, we manage the Local Issuing Office (LIO) for these Energy Codes. It is for wholesale market participants or other bodies active in the European Energy Market. These include power stations, suppliers or large users of energy.

ENTSO-E has assigned the Irish Local Issuing Office the Office Code "47". All EICs we issue begin with this office Code. EICs are only used in the wholesale energy sector. They are not connected to any location based codes.

Get Allocated an EIC

Step 1

If you are a wholesale energy market participant, send us a request to register new, modify, or deactivate EICs.

Please convert the form from Excel to PDF format and send it to

Email: eic@eirgrid.com

For electricity and gas EICs, email: eic@eirgrid.com

Step 2

We will process and validate the request form, consulting the Central Issuing Office (CIO) for International Codes.

Step 3

As the Local Issuing Office, we will allocate the EIC Code. A notification of the new Code will be sent by email. The Code will be published on our website and on the Central Issuing Office website if it's an International Code.

Only EIC codes published in the Central or Local Issuing Office websites are valid. EirGrid assume no responsibility or liability for the accuracy and the completeness of the information provided by an entity requesting an EIC Code.

In no event shall a Local Issuing Office be liable for any damages of any kind, including, but not limited to, direct, indirect, general, special, incidental, or consequential damages arising out of any inaccuracy or incompleteness of the information provided by an entity requesting an EIC Code.
