At the ‘Celtic Interconnections: Generating and Consolidating Energies’ seminar at the TU Dublin Grangegorman Campus last week, a range of industry and academic experts came together to discuss the powerful links between Ireland and France.

Primarily focused on matters related to energy, the National Centre for Franco-Irish Studies at TU Dublin hosted and EirGrid was delighted to support the occasion.

Topics ranged from the practicalities of electricity interconnection, to the importance of ensuring EU energy independence, with frequent references to the longstanding cultural ties between Ireland and France.

Speaking at the event, EirGrid Chief Infrastructure Officer Michael Mahon said it was a huge opportunity to bring experts from industry and academia together, “to really focus on French-Irish relations and how we actually work together”.

He added: “In EirGrid that’s really, really important to us, because one of our biggest projects has been the Celtic Interconnector that we’ve actually worked on with our French counterparts RTE [Réseau de Transport d'Électricité] over the last ten years … and that hugely beneficial project for Ireland and France will be up and running by the end of 2026 thanks to the strong relationship we have between Ireland and France.”
